Louise Bell

I have a large workshop on a farm in Burwash. Quiet, airy with beautiful views. Lots of mutual support from the other makers, my workshop neighbour Hannah Chappell Photographer took my profile photo.
I make patchwork and appliqué quilts for beds and walls in Liberty lawns, linens and silks. I am writing this in January, the best time of year as I can devote my time to new work, pinning and planning quilts, my workshop a frenzied mess of fabrics. Soon I’ll get stitching, making the commissions I discussed with clients at the end of last year and preparing for my big annual exhibition throughout May at Standen House with Wendy Dolan, textile artist.
I enjoy working to commission, discussing designs and colours, maybe incorporating memory fabrics in a quilt to make something very personal. Sometimes the guidelines are narrow, sometimes quite loose - either way my aim is to make a quilt which pleases both me and my customer.
I make stacks of cushions too - pheasants, blue tits and wrens appliquéd onto bolster cushions and square sea side cushions with beach huts, lighthouses and seagulls. Puffins and fish are coming up in 2017.
Born in Quebec, I grew up in Canada then UK. I spent hours looking at my great grandmother's quilts, counting patches, visually unpicking and reconstructing them. I was surrounded by people who made, built, painted and drew but had never thought of 'making' as a career. I studied French at university then decided to take a year out to make a few quilts. My gap year has lasted 35 years, quilt making my full time career. I am a member of the Sussex Guild, attend their shows and exhibit widely. I teach a few workshops in the Sussex Guild Shop in Lewes and wrote ‘201 Quilt Blocks, Motifs and Ideas’ for Cico a few years ago.
